King Lear

Have you noticed, sage,
Our gilded cage, sage,
That often doubles as a stage?
We often talk stage-rot.

I'd smooth those wrinkles with mine youthful hand,
Kiss away the cancer, steer us to land.
Away from a sea of seething plot.

You do speak, sage,
In decrepit adage.
Brandishing words-spells much like a mage.
My part, for my part, is to appear overwrought.

My serpent's tooth, thanks, is rather blessed.
Why ever not? I've learnt from the best.
We play each other, (but never really play each other)
And a denouement is begot.

I love this, our play, king,
It has it all-everything.
More so with a flaggon of beer king:
passion, Passion and fear, king.
Fear of Us, as you leer king.
Leer after day after leer, king.
The spotlight's yours- spew your curses.
My mind will think of curtains and patron's purses.
Notice, as the smoke disperses,
That there is applause- a whole lot.

My monologue's here! I must be glad.
Pray God, let me not be mad!
I'll sputter, I'll manage
To have as little of the carnage
That falls, rightfully, in your lot.

I know there are those who want to see
Us play out this savaging comedy.
I shall play distraught- I promise,
For as long as you need me.

  1. I cannot even begin to explain how comforting it is to come back from vacation and read something like this. Then again, the sense of comfort and tranquility comes through all your posts.

  2. Ghazal! You're back! How was your holiday? As far as this post goes, I cheated! I had 'Daddy Drama' and I wanted to write a post about it, but that seemed a bit, oh, incendiary, perhaps? Also, dirty laundry should be laundered and not aired. So, I found a compromise in poetry.

  3. It was amazing! I find that now I am back, I am missing the sparkling water and majestic palm trees more than ever... There was also a lot of shopping- more than I would usually do in a year. Ah, well, rest assured, it was still a joy to read.

  4. Florida, wasn't it? It's a favourite with the Spring Break crowd, which is why I have never been, I think it would be too sordid at the time.

  5. Yes, the very same. Ah, I suppose that is true, but it's definitely a must-see and it's actually very pleasant during the winter. A place I want to visit however is Dubai, how is it?

  6. Dubai is...well, the Eternal City, as I have so called it: always alive, ever entrancing, and delightfully dramatic. As one who has grown up in and with the city, my romance with it is a long enduring one. You simply must visit.

  7. I am determined to! I've been convincing my parents to take a family vacation for a very long time (to some place other than India and the States) and Dubai seems like a good place to start!
